Dorothy mae good deeds day
Paint the town
Dorothy Mae Good Deeds Day is a neighborhood beautification project that honors community development pioneer and NeighborWorks founder Dorothy Mae Richardson.
In 1968, Dorothy rallied her neighbors to combat community decay, declaring that, “the solution was not to tear down the whole neighborhood, but to fix the houses.” This visionary approach led Congress to charter NeighborWorks as a national nonprofit organization, inspired by her successful community reinvestment model.
Good Deeds Day is a revitalization of NeighborWorks Sacramento’s historic ‘Paint the Town’ event. Reimagined for a post-COVID landscape, volunteers provide homeowners and renters with curb address painting, front door repainting, and general yard cleanup.
Good Deeds Day is a testament to NeighborWorks Sacramento’s enduring legacy, both on a local and national scale. At its core, this beautification unites neighbors for impact and inspires a new generation of community leaders.

The Fruitridge Manor neighborhood was selected to receive good deeds for the first ever Good Deeds Day on September 16th, 2023. 9 homes were given a makeover thanks to our partners, volunteers, and staff.
But the good deeds didn’t stop there! A backpack drive and block celebration were also held for the neighborhood on the same day.
