Our mission is to partner with underrepresented communities to build healthy, sustainable, and equitable neighborhoods through education & counseling, housing development, empowerment, and advocacy. Let’s break that down.
In 1968, NeighborWorks founder Dorothy Mae Richardson rallied her neighbors to fight against community decay, declaring that “the solution was not to tear down the whole neighborhood, but to fix the houses.”
This visionary approach led Congress to charter NeighborWorks as a national nonprofit organization, inspired by her successful community reinvestment model.
NeighborWorks Sacramento has built upon this rich legacy, dedicating itself to educating and empowering the community since 1987. Our commitment extends to making sustainable homeownership a reality for individuals and families, ensuring that the community thrives and prospers.

One home at a time.
The Future is Bright
Under the new leadership of CEO and President Lauretta Casimir-Mahoney, NeighborWorks Sacramento has been reimagined for a post-COVID landscape.
In 2022, we embarked on a comprehensive rebuilding process, bolstering our team and enhancing our array of services.
2023 marked a reconnection with our community roots. Our HUD-certified counselors have elevated their proficiency, leading to a surge in housing counseling services, with appointments in high demand. In Arbuckle, we successfully completed a self-help housing project, offering families access to affordable homes.
Additionally, our beloved Dorothy Mae Good Deeds Day, formerly known as Paint the Town, organized its inaugural neighborhood beautification event in Fruitridge Manor, driven solely by our dedicated volunteers, staff, and partners.
Looking ahead to 2024 and beyond, NeighborWorks Sacramento is poised for a year defined by unprecedented ambition. We are committed to expanding our expertise and offerings across all facets of our organization, fostering deeper community engagement than ever before.
The next chapter in the NeighborWorks Sacramento story promises to be truly extraordinary, and we invite you to join us on this exciting journey!
